The more I play, the more I truly do enjoy the fixed camera. I’m honestly irritated that I’ve heard such bad things about that aspect of the game, because I don’t think it’d be the same without it, & by that I mean it would detract from the overall experience & make the whole thing, well, worse.

Despite the lower-quality graphics (as expected of the time, considering this remake came out in 2002), the game is genuinely scary. The fixed camera makes the halls of the mansion feel cramped & claustrophobic in spite of how big the actual building itself is. You feel tense just walking from room to room because you have no clue what you’re going to see, & you can’t “cheat” your way out of the suspense by rotating the camera around yourself like you might in one of the RE Engine remakes like RE2r or RE3r, so you just have to keep going. Hearing the noises of the zombies without knowing where they are is unsettling.

You can really feel the horror movie inspiration throughout the whole thing, & a lot of that owes itself to the fixed camera.

Unfortunately, I’m kind of a “yellow tape” gamer, so I struggle with finding everything I’m supposed to find in a game like RE1r where things like doors aren’t as obvious as they are in the more recent titles. I’m trying to avoid using tutorials as much as possible.

I put off starting this one for a good bit because of the tank controls / fixed camera angles—I’ve not heard good things about that aspect of the game—but I wish I hadn't, because I think those complaints are blown way out of proportion. The fixed camera isn't hard to get used to at all, & the controls are perfectly fine. I’m honestly not sure what all the fuss is about.

I've chosen to play as Jill. She's really cute in this game, both in terms of appearance & voice. I’m a big fan of Wesker's voice, too.

Dumped all my bullets into the first zombie I encountered, so now I have to rely on just the combat knife, but so far so good besides that... I just have to be careful about conserving ammo.
